Frustrated by his failure to claim the northlands from his younger siblings, King Hafiz Basaran II moved to tighten his grip on what territories of Elzveir he did hold claim to by appointing his second-born son Batikan Basaran as the Sovereign Prince of Buern, turning Buern into the Principality of Buern rather than keeping it as a Vicekingdom as it had been for nearly two centuries. This unseated Viceroy Atan Drakechild, but Hafiz sought to make Atan whole by allowing him to be a duke.

The war with Karina and Mirnov had carried on for many months without success, as Karina and Mirnov were staunchly holding the central northlands--the region they had dubbed Aldurstein--while the troops of King Hafiz Basaran II were often dying from the cold and snow, unable to be effective in combat. Feeling himself lose his grip on Elzveir, Hafiz II sought to tighten it by establishing Buern as a Principality, since it had been a Vicekingdom since Year 1. He replaced Viceroy Atan Drakechild with his second-born son, Batikan Basaran, naming him Sovereign Prince of Buern. To appease Atan Drakechild, he made the Drakechild heir a duke in the region, though this was still a considerable step below the title he'd held prior.   With his own son now in control of Buern as a Principality, Hafiz II began stationing more troops in the area and started drafting soldiers from Buern to sail around Elzveir to take on his siblings. Still, this would not be enough, and the conflict would persist for many months to come before peace would be reached.
