Yuzreg City (YUZZ-REGG)

A city that was originally built by Vaernebo, but was given to Miliim as part of the peace agreement that ended Leonov's War. Yuzreg was intended to be ruled by an elected duke from the Free Cities of Suorr, but they insisted that Yuzreg instead not have a governing body, allowing it and its neighboring/sub-settlements to be rendered free. The Federation of Miliim did not oblige this entirely, so while Yuzreg does not have a duke representative, it is still governed, specifically by the federation itself rather than local authorities. Yuzreg thus has a unique banner that encompasses the federation banner mixed with a fist to represent the Free Cities of Suorr.

A Federal City

Yuzreg was originally given to Miliim so that the Free Cities of Suorr could elect a representative, but they instead requested that no local ruling body ever be put in place for Yuzreg and its subsidiaries. This request was only half honored; while no duke was ever put in place for Yuzreg, the Federation of Miliim has exercised control over the city and its local settlements, making it essentially a city controlled by all the dukes of Miliim instead of one local duke.

Most in Yuzreg (and many outspoken individuals from Suorr) argue that this is worse than having a local duke and is counter to Suorr's intentions, but they recused themselves from the Federation of Miliim after the treaty was signed to end Leonov's War and thus have no say in the continuing politics of the federation.

Government

Yuzreg, unlike the other major cities of Miliim, is governed not by a local elected family, but by the Federation of Miliim itself.

Industry & Trade

As a seaside city, Yuzreg is well positioned for strong trade, though it has cliffs to contend with as far as the transportation of goods is concerned. A cavern system beneath the city has improved this, allowing the people of Yuzreg to cart goods between vertical levels of the city so that deliveries by boat can be easily brought to the surface. This cavern system involves a series of elevators that required a good deal of technology to be made available to the city, which was granted by various companies who wished to establish branches of their organizations in Yuzreg at the prompting of Suorr. This has rendered Yuzreg as a vital trade and industrial city within Miliim.   Yuzreg requires a good amount of importing to sustain itself, but its exports of marble, quartz, stone, and hardy ironwood from local forests have helped position itself as a crucial stop for many trade routes in Aen.

Districts

Coppergate Bazaar

The wealthiest district of Yuzreg, the Coppergate Bazaar, is a region guarded by high stone walls lined with quartz and copper, as well as two gates: one in the east and one in the west. Traders pay incredibly high sums of money to the Copper Men for the privilege of selling their goods in a building within Coppergate. The reputation of the bazaar is so grand that these fees have climbed by well over a thousand percent in the last few decades and merchants are still paying them. There's even a fee to access the bazaar and patrons still pay that fee just for the opportunity to look at the goods being sold.

Ironwood Quarters

The Ironwood Quarters are a grouping of four smaller districts collected around a vast ironwood tree--one of the largest and oldest of its kind. Efforts were originally made to chop the tree down, but his proved so difficult that the settlers of Yuzreg decided to let it remain and began building houses around it. The tree provides pleasant shade and protection from winter's snowfall. It positioning also means that nearly any home in the quarters is near enough to the cliffs to hear the sound of the waves below beating against the cliffs supporting the city.

Izler Works

The newly-formed industrial district of Yuzreg, this region was established fairly recently when Suorr encouraged companies within its cities to establish branches in Yuzreg due to its non-existent local government. The companies moved to purchase land from residents of the region which would eventually become Izler Works, a heavily-industrialized segment of central Yuzreg.

Krasnyia Alley

One of the oldest districts in Yuzreg, Krasnyia Alley was where the original builders of the city set up their camps and eventual homes while continuing to expand the city. It has since become a highly-coveted area to live in due to its wide streets, classical architecture, and nearness to the forest. It is also quite far east, allowing it to be well-guarded from the biting winds near the sea.

Kuvaris Plaza

A northern region of the city surrounded by cliffs on all but its southeastern sides, this area is a vast, sprawling marketplace where traders from all over Aen peddle their wares.

Mertepel Vista

This district is designated for guilds of all kinds, from mercenaries to masons. The buildings here are an interesting mix of classical fainarran architecture and modern miliir architecture, with the foundations of old fainarran buildings serving as a basis for expansion with modernized miliir techniques as the need for more guild space has risen.

Novn Promenade

The Novn Promenade is similar to Krasnyia Alley in that it was built by some of the first individuals who reached Yuzreg to establish it as a new city. The promenade features wide streets, classic architecture, and quick access to the mines below the city. It is the access to the mines that makes this area less desirable than its northern counterpart, as the scent and smoke rising from the mines render the area unpleasant.

Port Kyuzua

The western skyport of Yuzreg, where numerous airships dock to deliver and receive goods from the uppermost layer of the city. Even at night, Kyuzua is active and bustling, filled with airships, traders, and dockworkers.

Saatkaklar

This district is the first in an ongoing effort to refurbish and upgrade Yuzreg to more modern standards. Old buildings were torn down so that new ones could rise up, particularly apartments, parking garages, and other structures designed to embrace the future. It is the only region of Yuzreg that is fully upgraded, complete with a local tram, widened streets for vehicular travel, telephone lines, and other such technologies. While these things do exist elsewhere in Yuzreg, this is the only district that has been completely "upgraded" in this fashion.

Tundra Gardens

While few think of the tundra as being beautiful, Tundra Gardens challenges this notion. This area devoted to protecting wildlife and foliage is a guarded, beautiful region with only a few homes within it. One of the homes once belonged to the vaernish duke who resided in Yuzreg before it was given over to Miliim. Since then, a renowned businessman has purchased the remarkable estate for an extravagant sum.

Quartz Ridge

A large district of high-end houses and apartment buildings on the southernmost cliff edge of Yuzreg. Quartz Ridge is especially unique because the ground has largely been mined around it, leaving small bits of quartz poking up from some parts of the ground. In some cases, the quartz has been carved to create pillars, statues, and other such decore scattered throughout the district.

Subterranean Markets

The subterranean markets, as the name suggests, are markets set up for traders to peddle their wares below the surface. The subterranean markets also feature elevators so that those delivering goods by sea can easily bring their goods to the surface level.

Sultavon Enclave

Near the center of the city is the Sultavon Enclave, where the municipal buildings reside. Since there is no local government in Yuzreg, these are embassy buildings, barracks for standing armies from the federation, and housing for visiting government officials.

Ucnari Heights

One of the many upperclass districts of Yuzreg, though this area sees less demand than others of its kind. Ucnari Heights boasts views of the southern sea, but these views can often be blocked by the smog from the mineshafts nearby.

Guilds and Factions

Copper Men

The Copper Men are individuals responsible for the management of the Coppergate Bazaar. Copper Men manage access, defenses, bazaar fees, and other such elements of running the extravagant trade district.

History

Yuzreg was first built in 162 when the territory of Vaernebo was established. Yuzreg was created to be the westernmost port city of Vaernebo, intended to rival the city of Northport. However, in the year 252, the end of Leonov's War brought about by a council summit that made the decision to grant Yuzreg to Miliim, removing the city from Vaernebo's control.

Architecture

Yuzreg is the only city in Miliim that does not feature classical Miliir architecture, as it was originally a Vaernish settlement. While some newer districts may feature more traditional architecture for the region of Miliim, most of the buildings in the area have clear and distinct Fainarran influence. It is also a new city relative to the others in Miliim, being less than 200 years old.

Geography

Yuzreg is positioned atop a cliff roughly 35 meters above sea level, though a portion of the city is on the shores below the cliff, where all of the city's seaside trade is conducted. Surrounding the city on all sides but its western edge is a dreary tundra featuring many hardy plants, including a forest full of ironwood trees.

Climate

At all times of the year, Yuzreg is quite windy and rainy. Temperatures rarely exceed 10°C, reaching a maximum temperature of 11°C in the summer months, and a minimum temperature of -2°C in the winter months when a light snow tends to blanket the region. All in all, the temperature is generally low here, but never as low as it is in the northern areas.

Natural Resources

The most critical resource in Yuzreg is ironwood trees, the wood for which is chopped down from the nearby forest and sent off to other nations for use in construction. There are also many other plants, including Skilja and Skjaldur, both of which are valuable for various magics (particularly Tasseomancy). In addition to plant matter, the caverns below the city are used for harvesting quartz, marble, stone, and other such minerals.
